Hey all, another question/suggestion if I may. I have managed to go through all of my soil and was going to mix up a new batch and happened upon something I was wondering about. It is pulverized coconut fiber which comes in bricks and re-hydrates to a fair amount. It is supposed to be a peat moss substitute and I was told about it as a good orchid substrate but thought this be a good substitute for the organic component in bonsai soil as it is holds water but is not supposed to break down and is pH neutral. Any thoughts/experience? Hawaii maybe?

Hi Jim, I have tried it and found that it breaks down and becomes too wet, even when blended with sand, perlite or bark. You may have to repot often if you chose to use it. For me moss would not grow well on the finely ground stuff but ferns and moss come up as weeds on coarse chopped nuggets.

Thanks Jim and Ashley, the woman that sold it to me told me it was fairly stable but maybe that was just to get me to buy it, doh! I think I will stick with the pine mulch per your experiences, thanks again.

This is good, espically for conifers.
