Callicarpa Empty Callicarpa

Post  Bob Bailey Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:15 pm

I have recently aquired a stunning mame Callicarpa japonica (Japanese Beauty Berry),it is still in full leaf with the leaves just starting to turn colour.

Not knowing a great deal about this species I would welcome any advice on care, cultivation and pruning to ensure the tree fruits well in the future.
Thanks Jole

It would be easier to help you if we knew where you lived and your climate zone. Please consider adding that info under your user name as it appears at the right of your post.

OK, that's a little more helpful...

They are fast and easy to grow, but do like well drained soil (as a garden plant), and are hardy from the subtropics to zone 5 - I assume you know how to protect plants this size in your area. Flowers/berries are produced on new growth so you should do your structural pruning in the winter to get it ready for spring. As with anything that sets fruit/berries (hollies, crabapples, hawthorns) be very careful about overhead watering while they are flowering. The flowers are perfect, they are self fertile, but I'd bet you'd have more berries if there was another close by.

That's about all I can offer, maybe some of your countrymen can be more specific about it for your area.

Hi Bob,

Would be possible for you to post some pictures of you callicarpa?
I'm wishing to have one of these.

Are there any bonsay nurseries in UK that have any and can send them to Portugal?

Have fun, regards.
