i think many countries make their own rules up to suit themselves - many (all ?) top shows in Japan will not allow a tree over a meter to enter (they class it as a garden tree over a meter tall) but indonesian shows seem to love 1.2 meter + trees.

in the Uk the shohin shows request 25cm or smaller, but I see American trees of 30cm classed as shohin -

I dont think you will find a worldwide standard in place

cheers Marcus

yes, that is why i'm very confuse, every country has their own rule, here in our place i think 1.2 meters is allowed for large and 12 inches below is shohin or small.

Yep, I've seen some who seem to categorize the trees (almost) by weight. Or by how many hands are needed to carry it. A taller literati can be categorized a size smaller for example.

Refer to this http://bonsaiart.co.uk/tree-choice/bonsai-size-classification

Check the chart from Wiki also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonsai#Size_classifications
