Water Oak (Quercus Nigra)

Post  Jay Wilson on Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:57 pm

I thought I'd share a few pictures of one of my water oaks.
I collected this tree about seven or eight years ago and have been playing with it ever since. It's coming along, but water oaks have fairly large leaves that seem to only get larger when the tree is defoliated. I've also experienced a pretty constant die back of the finer twigs so I don't get the ramification I would like.
Over all, I think Water Oak is a middle ground tree for bonsai..... Fun to play with, but will probably not make much more than a good tree.
How it looked this morning:

The four sides after defoliating:

Here is what I think is the best front:

And a couple of close-ups of the trunk:

The deadwood is pretty much as found when collected. The trunk has had a few chops along the way to get to where it is today.

Edit: Well darn....I tried to imbed the images but it didn't work. Sorry

Nice Jay I like the first defoliated pic as your front IMO. It's cool tree, I wouldn't mind having it. Good luck with those leaves to reduce.. but if not just enjoy the silhouette during winter.

I picked two up two years ago. They were being thrown away by a nursery. They are definitely very long term projects and don't reduce much at all in leaf size. But, I plan on the finished project being 36 inches+ tall to so I don't think it will matter much.

I like your tree, it has a nice natural feel to it.

Very nice tree (love the dead wood), I was wondering if you have done a total defoliation before because I read that it was bad to do. Instead to prune a few big ones through out the year.

Wow! I had lost track of this thread and didn't realize there had been replies. Sorry for not getting back.

Brian. Thanks. Now that I look at it more, I agree about the front.

Michael... Got pic's?

Todd. Thanks, glad you get a natural feel from it. That's what I'm working towards.

Jake. Glad you like the deadwood, it's the trees best feature.

I've done total defoliation on my water oaks. The trees come back strongly but the leaves are generally bigger....It does help with the ramification though. I usually get several back buds to break on each twig after leaf removal and then I can keep the tips and larger leaves trimmed which results in smaller leaves down the road.
