What bonsai tree can use black lava soil? Empty What bonsai tree can use black lava soil?

I bought 5 gallons of black lava soil imported from Indonesia at our local bonsai exhibition. They look porous and seem to hold water well. Hope somebody can tell me this type of soil is suitable for what type of plant. It is ok to use it for pine.

Black lava soil. Ah yes.

This is particularly good for Black pines. It's also good for Black olive. I can't think of any other tree with the work Black in it. But if you find one, then that one too. Laughing

It's lava. It's great for just about any tree.

It's lava. It's great for just about any tree.

Does black mulberry count? Very Happy

In Japan we used a black lava, "fuji-zuna" as a componant in soil mixes along with akadama for pines and such. I use a crushed red lava (if I can still find it) in my soil mix here. I would think you could use it in a mix for almost anything. I don't use it by itself here, and we didn't use it by itself in Japan either.

A friend of mine is using that stuff mixed with common topsoil for most of his plants with good results - mostly sui mui, also podocarpus, premna, serissa. I don't know what proportions he uses for the mixture.
