Seed Collection

Post  franke65 on Wed May 16, 2012 7:14 pm

I know it takes seed almost forever to develop into real bonsai worthy of the name, so please don't answer about that.

My son has 2 Japanese maples in his yard. Both have a lot of seeds hanging on. I want to attempt to sprout these although I know the chances of success are slim.

My question is, since they are still hanging on the trees, when and how should they be harvested and kept for the attempt? Got to be somebody out there who knows a lot more about this than I do, and I would appreciate all the help I can get!

Hi,
At the end of August, I start collecting maples seeds (Acer palmatum, Acer burgerianum...), usually when the seeds turn to yellow colour.
Then, the seeds collected are kept dry into the fridge till the end of December. I start the seeds hydratation for 48h, following by the stratification in the fridge (3 to 5°C) from January to the end of February for the germination on March.

Regards,
giang
