Ok, i was looking at my Indoor Too Big Ficus today. The tree for the most part is looking good with lots of new growth coming in. Some yellow leaves have fallen but is being replaced with new growth. Then i noticed a single branch, with a scale like structure on the branch. Not near any leaves. I have not seen this before, and there is no other blight on the tree at all. The leaves do not have any weird discoloration spots or anything. By all accounts the tree is in perfect health. Even this ...

i have recently noticed on one of my cork bark elms that alot of the leaves have small white streakes on them and some of these leaves are disformed, i was thinking this was a nutrition issue but am not sure what it could be lacking the tree is planted in akadama , i use bio gold as a slow release fertilizer and in the growing season i use a standard liquid bonsai fertilizer 1-2 times a month.

The reason i say you can re-pot from now on in is, if you have a Bonsai pot to suit, the beauty of this is that if you do wish to exibit the tree during the winter the surface soil be new and weed free, also, if after a month or two you feel the pot is not ideal or the tree needs re-positioned you have lots of time to correct the problem. If you wait till the tree starts to bud in the spring you only get one chance!!

Hi Guys! No one has any problems? I wonder why- because the Eastern United States is suffering a number of plant disease epidemics because of the cool wet spring. You may have heard that "late blight" is wiping out the tomato crop. Late blight is the disease that caused the great Irish potato famine of the 1840s. The famine caused a million Irish to starve to death and caused a million to emigrate (out of a total population of 6 million). Well, late blight occasionally causes ...

I got this problem with my black olive (bushida). It has some kind of black spots under its leaves that looks like eggs and when I try to scrape it, it will be removed easily. But there are so many of them. My tree looks very weak and sickly. Leaves looks dry as if it weren't watered. Has anyone encountered this kind of pest? Pls help.

This is a Japanese maple which I purchased in June at our club's auction. I'd began cleaning away moss today around it's roots but never saw anything like these hundreds of tiny black balls . My son thinks they look like fish eggs but the nearest a fish has come to this bonsai was when I applied fish emulsion to fertilize last week.

Any ideas ? Insect eggs? Spores?

Also is there a product I can use to remove the moss other than brushing with a toothbrush?

There's a terrible new disease attacking Red Bay trees along the southeast coast of the US. That's bad enough, but what makes this a major catastrophe is that red bay is a wild relative of the avocado, and the disease just hit Homestead, FL, home of the east coast avocado industry. Avocado wilt is vectored by a bark beetle- a very FAST bark beetle- and is spreading much quicker than anyone expected. Our unit agreed to house avocado rootstock until the USDA in Florida could graft scions from ...

I believe the variety is Squamata Meyeri. The tree is fed regularly with Miracle Grow and Maxi Crop at the same time as all my other trees.

I realise the foliage pads need to be built up a lot, but I need the tree to grow healthily first. ...

Hi All

I'm new to this forum and I would like your help on identifying a pest that has appeared on several of my Bonsai trees. I'm located in the West Midlands, UK.

I first noticed them on my Juniper Tree, the tree was not looking to good and I first put it down to the wet summers we have had. On close inspection I found the pests grouped together in tight places like the intersection of branches and inside parts of the flaky bark. I also find them underneath the rims of the pots.
I just attended a meeting in California on "sudden oak death", and heard a lot about deaths of trees caused by new beetles, new pathogens, etc. The most strikingly obvious take-home message was: it's not the pathogens, it's the practices. A lot of the east-coast nurseries that are getting hit repeatedly by the sudden oak death pathogen are *not* unlucky victims; they are TERRIBLE nurseries (hold your tongue, Jim; we aren't naming any names here!). So here's a short list of things ...

Hi Nina,

It's great to be able to consult with someone with your expertise. I was a Botany major in college and have been a lifelong plant freak, but now I take care of animals for a living. Anyway, I have had an ongoing issue with scale on several of my pine and juniper bonsai. The scale itself appears to be running rampant here in SE Massachusetts. What is your prefered method of dealing with this pest. I've used dormant oil and isotox with mixed results. Thanks for any advice,

For someone who has never had any problems apart from mildew in the 15 years that I've been growing Bonsai I supposed I was due a few problems

The new growth on my Pyracantha, which was growing well, has now turned yellow/brown and the leaves are now starting to srivel up. Any ideas?

This tree was not re-potted this year and was growing well so I did give it a light feed a couple of weeks ago. Could it be a case of tooo much too soon?

Hi guys,

Herewith a close-up of the Larch that I mentioned in a previous post.

The image on the left was taken on Saturday morning and the left image was taken Sunday pm. You can see how badly the tree has suffered in one day. This tree, along with my Larch group were on the same shelf as my Crab Apple & Pyracantha which look like they have fire blight but I ain't got a scooby what this is.

The swirls are starting to discolour in the centre and work its way out. Unfortunatly ...

Honeybees in peril

Honeybees were mentioned in another thread because of concern over Bee Colony Collapse Disorder. I thought I would share this article from Science News. The pathogen is a fungus. This article doesn't mention this, but it's strongly suspected that colony collapse is more prevalent in stressed bees, and the stress could be any number of things, including exposure to pesticides.

Hello,

Am having a major problem with a specimen cotoneaster horizontalis and am looking for advice on possible causes/solutions.

In mid Feb I re-potted the tree and noted that root growth was not particularly extensive althought the tree had thrived over the past 2 years since I aquired it. I did no real root work on the cotoneaster but carefully re-potted in my usual porous mix of Kittydama, Akadama, bark and Hydroleca.

At this stage the tree had, as usual, stayed green and ...

Last year I had a very old Yew die 18 months after collecting. It had thrived for 12 months then became weak. on investigation I discovered that the bark had swollen in one area and had white edges. When touched the 'bark' fell away from the tree and felt soft like 'Mush'.

I have just discovered the same 'mush' on a tree starting from the base that I have had for over 5 years, it was repotted in January this year and has not thrived since the repotting... any ideas... will post photos ...

It's coming on Japanese beetle season again (the subject came up in another thread here). I think I've found a solution. Chickens. I suspect, however, that you'll have to move to the country to take advantage of this solution, since few towns like them wandering around free (or caged for that matter).

At any rate, since we inherited the neighbors brood of fighting cocks and hens, we've hardy seen a Japanese beetle -- not even on our Rose of Sharon or on real roses. They forage everywhere ...
