Hi ya guys, I was after some advice.

Whilst wander around Chez Monkey and putting up some protection from the heaviest of the rain that we have had (yes Tony, we do get some rain by the seaside!) I have been doing some re-evaluation of some of my trees. I’ve got a Maple that would make 2 better trees rather than 1 bad tree with a telegraph pole for a belly.

So my question is when is the best time to air layer it? Some of my books suggest early summer (when exactly is that?) or should ...

I purchased one of my JBP's about ten years age. When I bought it, it had pretty good ramification already, but not much going for it trunkwise or taperwise. About four years ago, I put it in an 18"X24" growing box filled with a 50/50 combination of akadama and hard small-grained calcined clay. I allowed several lower branches to grow in an attempt to thicken the trunk. The trunk has increased by 1/4" to a 1 1/4" inch caliper at the base. It stands about 14" tall ...

I have a question about the mechanics of Pine physiology. It is well understood that hard pruning of pines should be done in the Winter when the tree is growing less and sap leakage will be minimised.

But I am curious and want to understand why is it that even when we choose the correct time to hard prune a pine we can not reduce the trees foliage by too much.

I am only starting to learn about pines as the deciduous are my first love and I am curious what is the actual mechanics behind ...

The reason I want to start this off as early as possible is that I have a football sized chunk of red stone from beside Loch Lomond which I would like to match up with ...

I am a nature lover. After looking at the cute bonsais, I got very much interested in making my own bonsai. Very real and serious interest. I realise the patience and love required. I do not want to buy a ready made one! I hope to learn a lot by creating my own bonsai.

Please guide me how to do this. I stay in Abu Dhabi, UAE, normally a hot, humid area with summer from end of April to Mid of November. Rains only for 15 days in months nov/dec. Winter from Dec to April. Since ...

Hi Folks,

Here is a small contorta pine (shore pine) that I collected last year. I really like all the twists in the main branches but I can seem to find a way of incorporating them into the design. Any design ideas would be appreciated. One note the main branches (with all the curves/twists) are very stiff.

Cheers Gman

I was thinking 4"x10"x10". 1 Gallon is 231 cubic inches, so stepping up to 400 cubic inches would leave plenty of room to grow, with out being too big.

okey dokey. Don't know exactly what you call this type of wiring, but I understand it's used for gradually moving big branches incrementally. I've seen it done - what appears to be a loop of thin wire tightly wound around itsefl, around a branch and anchored somewhere on the pot. I am aware that small turns are employed with a nail or something through the wire. My question is, is there a particular type of wire required? I apologize for the poor resolution, but you can kinda see the pods.

I've been cutting back overgrown plants in my front gardens today and got to wondering. Has anybody tried using Plumbago for bonsai? I don't know the latin name for it, but it very common in the gardens here. The main stems eventually get woody, puts out long shoots all over the place, and has beautiful blue flowers in loose clusters all summer. Leaves are small. I want to try it but would like to know if anyone has any experience with this plant. Thanks.

My next project a River Birch. I intend to mimic the form it's already growing in just at a significantly reduced scale and with denser tertiary development.

I'm looking for a finished tree at 36 inches in height. It is presently 36 inches in height about 4 inches above where the main trunk splits into the second large branch (really second apex).

I need to regrow the apex. I intend to keep the main trunk, but it needs better taper.

I do not like short fat sumo styled trees. ...

OK so I'm extremely new to bonsai (as in about a week) and have devoured Tomlinson's complete bonsai book a few times. I also have a bonsai tree that I've looked after for many years, but I bought it already shaped. (It's a Chinese elm if you're interested.) There are a couple of hawthorns growing in the hedge out the back that I was thinking of "bonsaiing" but anyway my question is this:

When you are choosing a shape for your bonsai, it seems usual to prune it right back to ...

I have recently recived this bonsai for my bithday.

I found out that it was a ponytail palm after looking around abit

There were glued in rocks that I removed after doing some looking around at other sites that told me they were bad.

I assume my grandparents bought this tree for me at HomeDepot. I plan on going to pick up a book on bonsai growing because I assume it gets complicating, but any tips you guys could give me on this specific tree or tips on keeping it alive for a week before ...
