I had a nice little chinese juniper which I wanted to bulk up a bit. It was partially styled with loads of potential, shohin sized. I wanted to plant it in my garden, but as some of you may be aware I am owner of a cerebrally challenged dog who used to have a habit of howking my trees out of the ground and charging about with them in her cavernous gob. My elderly green fingered neighbour came to my aid and said I could plant it in her garden. It's been there a year or so, thickening up sweetley ...

This California Juniper was collected in the mid 1970's by Harry Hirao, aka "Mr. California Juniper". My first sensei, Bob Kato bought it from Harry. When Bob died 20 some years ago, I bought it from his widow. At that time, no work had been done on it, so I started from scratch.

This is one of those rare trees where the trunk and live vein makes a full 360 degree twist. The height from the pot rim is 41 inches.

Today I've been doing some trimming, a little wiring, cleanig up the ...

I had taken the tree ( Pinus contorta contorta) to my clubs Novemeber meeting and got a couplee of ideas on its development but somehow I just didn’t feel it….so I looked closely at the tree and visualized the trees in the area where I had collected in some 6/7 years ago.
Hi guys, I would like to share and get some advice on one of my latest trees.

On a family camping holiday I stumbled across a Bonsai nursery undergoing a referb. As you can imagine it was all a bit upside down but I did manage to find this little(?) beauty at a more than reasonable price

As many of you are aware this size of tree (16” H x 14” W x 5”Neb) is a little on the large size for me, point in fact it’s still a “does it stay or does it go” tree, but I fell in ...

A friend of mine, owns this tree but wasnt sure about the carving. I did'nt like the way the deadwood poked out to the right and the straight section of live wood underneath the right side. It also looked as if a Makita had been run up the middle, rather than natural rot. He gave me the go ahead to refine it for him. Did this work this morning. First couple of pics are how it was.

Having now got a little bit more confident i thought i would post another of my trees .

What are your thoughts on it , maybe a new pot. I'm trying to get something to grow on the bend near the top ,i would rather it grew on the outside but over time i will get it over there. That bit has always been a bit weak.

I'm sure someone will say remove the little one but my wife likes that one so i'm not allowed to remove it.

I took this Red Cedar (aka Juniperus Virginiana) yesterday to the Ed Trout workshop of the BSSWFL.

Ed, the "low solution" was good way to go! I decided to leave the second higher top jin on for now. Perhaps it is a safer way to keep the foliage beneath that one than beneath the other bigger one. I will try to match the wood. The "totem pole" has not been finished yet, need to add more taper to it.

Again, congrats on the National Exhibition Award, Ed, and many thanks ...

This winged elm was collected 2 years ago outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma from an old quarry that had been converted into grazing land for cattle. The rocky low nutrient soil and constant munching by the cows have resulted in many stunted old trees with loads of character. Large old scars had been rotting for sometime and needed carved. Carving is not quite done yet...I just removed all of the rot and connected the three hollows to allow for water to drain.

Thanks for looking.

A few smaller ficus natalensis. The foliage on the trees is fuller and the leaves much larger than I prefer as I have left both grow out a bit before moving them into my green house for the winter.

I just recently moved to New York City and had to go to the BBG. New York City living does not cater very well to bonsai but I am fighting the good fight. I have a couple on the fire escape and some ficus inside. Anyways, this exhibit was AMAZING and it filled my bonsai buckets. I thought I'd share.

I posted this photo here on the IBC of a Japanese maple I acquired in March 2002. The date of this image is September or October 2003. I received the tree bare-root and put it in this cheap Korean pot. I was living in Tucson AZ at the time, and it was my first maple for bonsai. I did little in the way of training back then; I was just learning to keep it alive in a pot in the Sonoran desert. I kept it under shade cloth through the growing season which was helpful in keeping the leaves ...

As you can see in the pictures is a left field and left all kinds of care, with appropriate permissions of its owner proceeded to back such great abandonment

With so much weed is difficult to see the pomegranate

I've had this one since a Hal Mahoney workshop at the Texas Bonsai Society show in Corpus Christie in 2000.

It is planted in a roof tile scavenged from a wste pil near my daughter's house in St. Pete Beach, Fla.

First, the workshop tree.

The tree today.

The art instructor at Colorado College here had seen a display last year at the New York Botanical Garden which featured traditional accent plants. After the Pikes Peak Bonsai Society's fall show this past September, the topic came up and he was eventually referred to me. I was intrigued by the theoretical concept of video accent plants but had no idea how this would ...

I have been working on this juniper for the last 4 years. Torulosa juniper do not seem to be too popular for

bonsai, perhaps due to their growth habit.

With this tree I am actually taking advantage of the way the tree sends out the "flamelike" growth in the ends

of the branches. I first grew secondary branches (forks), partly also the tertiary branches.

While I let the "flames" developing in the lower sections I trim them back more often in the upper more

These pics are of a vine I collected last December/January. I was growing in a tree/shrub like manner as opposed to climbing as a vine would. Obviously it isnt a boug, but the growth habit reminds me of one. Previously I think Jim id'd it as a Carolina Jessamine.

Any thoughts on where to go with it. Jeez is it heavy! The base at the widest point is 15 inches (38 cm).

Blind and practising bonsai

I want to pay my respect to a remarkable man by the name of Koos Robbertson. Koos is blind, but not withstanding that he practises bonsai. At a regional bonsai club gathering held recently in Gauteng province South Africa, one of the activities was that clubs had to do a demonstration on a tree to best represent their club logo. Koos represented his club, the Rustenburg Bonsai Kai. Just compare the logo on his shirt with the tree Koos styled and notice how close he came to showing his clubs logo. ...

Myrtle just dug up

Small leaf Myrtle growing in my yard for about 25 years or so. I think it's myrtus communis var. Tarentina. Height from rim of tub is about 19 inches.

I plan to let it soak for 2 or 3 days with some rooting hormone and mild fertilizer in the water. Then I'll hose the old soil off of the roots and soak it again. In about a week it will go in a pot. Then comes the time for study and decision making about it's future.
