Taiwan Bonsai Creators Exhibition 2010 (Number XIII)
Hello forum members. Since 1998, the Taiwan Bonsai Creators Association has held its annual show during the month of june. Only once was the show postponed and celebrated on an alternate date to commemorate the 10th ASPAC last october. Although there are many other exhibits held in Taiwan, this is the time that the professionals get together to display their works. Many times the big bosses (Lao Pan) come to see this show and purchase some of the trees. It is common to see them again in the Hwa Fong exhibit (November), under another name.
Here are some of the exhibits, including some which garnered top prizes:
1. Murraya Paniculata

Dondie,
Yes, the only way to achieve fine ramification and countless twigs is by wiring. Combining wire and grow and cut methods achieves superior branch structures. In Taiwanese bonsai, a tree is developed through a series of steps. Throughout all of these a lot of hard work is involved.

Jose

I don't get it. I understand wiring is to put the branches (& sometimes the trunk) where you want them. How does wiring promote ramification?
Thank you for the pictures. I appreciate having the names with the trees. Why are the hackberries & some other species defoliated?

Iris,
Precisely, in order to achieve such multiple stems, wire is used to place twigs, as well as branches in position. Like I said before, this method is combined with the grow and cut technique. If left alone and only pruned, no three dimensional effect will be achieved.
Mao Pu (Celtis) and other trees are defoliated to display fine ramification.

Jose
